DIY ORANGE-COCOA LIP BALM

I love DIY cosmetics. Something I can do by myself that is 100% natural.

I’m addicted to lip balms. I’m not sure, if my lips could even  survive anymore without a good moisturizer
I’ve tried many options and even though I had 10 different brands of lip balms at home, nothing was really good enough. Always felt like my lips are still try under the creamy layer…

That’s how I started to look for a perfect recipe for DIY lip balm. I’ve tried many ways and step by step discovered the best version of it for me and it’s really easy to make! It’s very moisturizing, keeps lips soft and also protects them from cold weather. Great for the winter season! Sometimes I use it also for other purposes, for instance to moisturize my cuticles

Ingredients you need:

10 ml of sweet almond oil

5 g of cocoa butter

2,5 g of lanolin

5 g  of beeswax

3 drops of orange essential oil

My procedure usually looks like that:
I place heat-proof liquid measuring cup in a pan half filled with water. You can use a double boiler, if you have it. Now add sweet almond oil into the cup, then beeswax, cocoa butter and lanolin. Now heat it over gently stirring occasionally until the wax melts totally. In the end add orange essential oil. Stirr one more time.

Pour into containers or tubes and let it cool. Done!

Preparing DIY Lip balm

I usually use empty plastic lip balm containers, that are easy to buy on ebay (and they’re really cheap!)

Note: These measures don’t have to be perfect, let’s say 5 g/ml is about a teaspoon! I honestly never really check the measures, but add ingredients just how it feels right.
That amount should be enough for 2 lipstick containers, 10ml each.

What are the benefits of using such ingredients?

Sweet almond oil is probably my favorite oil. It’s good for skin and hair. It’s mild and hypoallergenic, so could be used even for a very sensitive skin. It has a slightly nutty smell, which I personally really like. It’s rich in Vitamins, especially E and A, omega-9 fatty acids, proteins, potassium and zinc.

Cocoa butter is a great addition to lip balms, because it’s a great moisturizer. It’s also good for a sensitive skin. Soothes burns, rashes or even infections. It’s full of antioxidants, protecting skin from free radical damage. Unrefined coca butter smells pretty strongly of chocolate, which I really LOVE!

Lanolin, also called wool wax, produced by sheep’s skin, is most similar to the natural oils produced by human skin, so it’s very often used in cosmetics. I found out it’s actually the greatest addition to my lipbalms for winter  It’s deeply moisturizing and keeps the moisture of the skin for a looong time!

Bee wax is a natural wax produced by the honey bees. It’s a natural protectant, that helps to keep the moisture of the skin. In this recipe we can say it works as an emulsifier,  however beeswax shouldn’t be considered as a real emulsifier, because it only adds thickness and hardness to the product, which is perfect for lip balms, but it wouldn’t be good to make for example body lotions.

Orange essential oil has a great juicy smell, but that’s not the only benefit. It’s considered an antidepressant, antiseptic, aphrodisiac, deodorant, digestive stimulant and circulation booster! Can’t be bad for the lips

One more thing! It’s a very natural product, so if u decide to make a bigger amount of it, keep it in a fridge!

Good luck!
